Good Fortune and Reunion #1:

The High School Reunion was pretty awesome. In my last post, I mentioned I was a bit nervous about the whole thing. But it was truly one of the best events of my life. Whatever past transgressions, we all decided that it was time to have fun and reminisce about happy moments from those years, and reflect on our good lives. What I like about reunions is that it causes a lot of us to reflect on our blessings and gifts. I’m not trying to be sappy…. but we all need to take a look around us and be grateful for many of the good things in our lives.

Here’s a photo from the Reunion of my old friends that were in Elementary School with me.

Look at this bunch! We were inseparable…then… but we became separated in high school. The most delightful part was reconnecting with my childhood friends and realizing that the fellowship really never disappeared.

Good Fortune:

As you will see, there’s a little video of me when you visit my site. My good friends at VDOLife were kind enough to produce that little ditty for visitors. How wonderful to help personalize this site, just a bit more. Thank you my friends!

Fame:

This week I was asked to give my two cents in an Ottawa Newspaper article about Twitter. Yes, it was my 15 minutes of fame, but it was all mine baby! Paul Brent of CTV News Ottawa, writes a column in “24 Hours Ottawa” and he asked me to weigh in – hell, ya! Here’s the article.

Reunion #2 and Giving Back to Traditional Media:

Tomorrow is another Reunion of sorts: I have the distinct pleasure of attending an Open House at CTV Ottawa. Our local TV stations are in dire need of public support to help them survive. And tomorrow’s event is about learning why local television still matters. There are so many naysayers out there, but the fact is that Traditional Media isn’t dead, it just needs to change with the times. Many are doing a great job of employing Social Media into mainstream information sharing, but others are sticking to their old ways and suffering badly for it. I look forward to tomorrow because:

1) I get to see my old friends and reminisce about the good old days – my career began at CTV Ottawa

2) I get to learn about what I can do to help the TV station survive

3) I get to have conversations with people about how TV can adapt to change

Local television remains relevant and important, we need to know what’s going on in our communities and we still need mass communication. Just look at the terrible tragedy of young Victoria Stafford in Woodstock, Ontario. Television, radio and newspapers were necessary in helping the community, supporting investigative and search efforts, and helping to get the word out (hopefully to apprehend the suspects). Yes, the Internet and Social Media played a huge part as well. But one never replaces the other.

For all of you anti-traditional media-ites out there… give your head a shake. Traditional media matters – it just needs to matter more in different ways. Yesterday, the Globe and Mail launched a new site – this is a Traditional Media outlet that GETS IT. Others can learn from it. So instead of being dismissive about Traditional Media in general, support your local stations in a way that helps them adapt to this new world. Haven’t they done something for you in your life?
